Why marketing companies want to be in Cape Town

The Cape Town Central City Improvement District’s (CCID) third annual Residential Survey suggests that the top category of profession among those surveyed in 2015 is media, marketing and publishing followed by the creative and financial sector. This comes as no surprise, given the growing presence of marketing and media companies in Cape Town. The recent R1.5bn DQ&A/incuBeta merger highlights this trend, with the company having confirmed their new office space in The Towers for 2016. The deal has been recognized as one of the biggest mergers in South Africa to date.

Here are 3 reasons why marketing and media companies in South Africa prefer Cape Town as their destination of choice:

1. Superior infrastructure

According to the CCID’s recent survey, there is a significant increase in the number of respondents who use the MyCiTi bus system, having climbed to 50% from 37% in 2014. What is important to note is that 53% of respondents stated that they feel safe to walk to work – something which is unheard of in other South African cities. The City of Cape Town’s infrastructure is one of the main contributing factors to the city being recognized as “one of the most expat friendly cities in the world” with a unique European feel to it according to Expat Info Desk. This makes The Mother city a perfect location for marketing and media companies, typically working with professionals from all over the world.

2. A welcoming cosmopolitan culture

The City of Cape Town’s expat friendly appeal is evident in its cosmopolitan culture, easy-going lifestyle and liberal society. As a result, there is a large expatriate community which presents a great opportunity to network and socialize with locals and fellow expats. For international employees, Cape Town is indeed an easier place to settle in to from a cultural perspective. Furthermore, the majority of The Mother City’s residents fall into the 25 to 34 year-old age group, however the most noticeable increase was among the 35 to 44 year age bracket – having climbed from 22% to 31%.

3. South Africa’s only true “Downtown lifestyle”

Apart from living in close proximity to work and skipping highway traffic, the appeal of a ‘downtown’ lifestyle makes the CBD a very attractive location to young and trendy professionals. Over the years, both Bree Street and Kloof Street have seen a number of upmarket bars, restaurants and shops being established in the area – noted by local Cape Tonians as one of the most popular areas to visit. In particular, the city comes alive on “First Thursdays” – a free cultural experience where galleries and other attractions in the central city stay open late on the first Thursday of every month. What started in late 2012 with just 6 art galleries has grown into one of the city’s foremost cultural experiences, attracting thousands of people every month.
