Cycling enthusiasts residing in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs can look forward to the launch of a brand new Specialized Store in Tygervalley towards the end of 2015. The international cycling brand partnered with reputable Gauteng-based West Rand Cycles owned by Eben Venter to take on the market opportunity in Cape Town. The new cycle shop will be managed by former engineer Mike Switzer, who believes the “lifestyle retail format” associated with the pioneering Specialized brand will resonate well with local cycling enthusiasts.

The lease was negotiated by Stephan Gericke from Baker Street Properties, who states that “we are proud to assist such a reputable cycling brand with their property requirements in Cape Town.” The new store will be centrally situated at the Sterling Place Building (86 Edward Street), Tygervalley – conveniently positioned to local cycling trials.

Specialized Concept Store In Cape Town

Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc., more commonly known as Specialized, is a major American brand of bicycles and related products based in Morgan Hill, California. Founded by Mike Sinyard in 1974, the cycling enthusiast sold his Volkswagen Bus for $1,500 to fund a cycle tour of Europe, where he bought sought-after Italian bike components to import to the United States. The company has sponsored various well-known cycling teams and individual riders over the years, and the brand became synonymous with technological innovation to professional cyclists.

West Rand Cycles has built up an excellent reputation in its local Gauteng market. The business has been actively involved in the Cape Epic cycle tour since its inception and is now ABSA Barclay’s preferred technical support partner at the tour. Specialized approached Eben Venter and West Rand Cycles to take on the new opportunity in Cape Town together, with Switzer stating that the proposed partnership was almost a “no-brainer” for them.

The Specialized retail format of this cycle shop goes above and beyond the purpose of facilitating sales of bikes and equipment. Instead, the store environment takes on the form of a “lifestyle center”, inviting cycling enthusiasts to enjoy the variety of amenities on offer which includes a coffee bar and a custom bicycle setup and fitment center utilizing the latest Specialized Body Geometry Retül equipment. The store will also cater to all types of cyclists, offering products and accessories from children to pro-athletes.
